What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. They are widely used by web applications to work efficiently, securely manage sessions, and maintain state across different pages.
How We Use Cookies
Space Monkey uses four categories of cookies to provide, secure, and improve our services:
- Necessary: Always on. Strictly essential for you to browse the application and use its features securely, such as handling authentication.
- Functional: Used to provide enhanced features and personalization, like remembering your theme preferences.
- Analytics: We use Google Analytics via Google Tag Manager to measure site performance and understand how visitors move around the site. These are only set if you grant consent.
- Marketing: May be set through our site by our advertising partners to build a profile of your interests. These are only set if you grant consent.
Google Consent Mode v2
We implement Google Consent Mode v2, a privacy-focused framework designed to respect your choices and ensure compliance with privacy regulations. This technical implementation puts you in control of how your data is used for analytics and advertising purposes.
How it works: Before any tracking or analytics scripts load on our website, we set all tracking-related permissions to "denied" by default. This means that no analytics data, advertising data, or personalization data is collected until you explicitly give your consent through our cookie banner or preference dialog.
What this means for you: Your privacy is protected from the moment you visit our site. Google Tag Manager and other tracking tools will only activate and collect data after you've made an informed choice about your cookie preferences. If you decline or dismiss the cookie banner without accepting, no tracking occurs beyond essential functionality.
Technical implementation: We configure consent states for different tracking categories including analytics_storage, ad_storage, functionality_storage, and personalization_storage. Each category remains in a "denied" state until you grant permission. Your consent preferences are stored locally and respected across your browsing session.
This approach ensures that our use of analytics and tracking tools is fully transparent and under your control, giving you peace of mind that your privacy choices are technically enforced, not just promised.
Global Privacy Control (GPC)
We respect the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, an emerging privacy standard that allows you to express your privacy preferences at the browser level. If your browser is configured to send a GPC signal, we automatically detect and honor it by:
- Applying restrictive data processing settings to your account
- Limiting data sharing with third parties
- Treating the signal as a valid opt-out request under applicable privacy laws
The GPC signal is detected only once per browser session for authenticated users and automatically updates your privacy preferences. Learn more about GPC and how to enable it at globalprivacycontrol.org.
Cookie Details
| Cookie Name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| session | Maintains your secure user session after logging in. Contains a signed JWT payload. | Session | Necessary |
| cookie-consent | Stores your consent preferences (via localStorage). | Persistent | Necessary |
| __stripe_mid | Set by Stripe for fraud prevention and payment processing. Identifies returning visitors across merchant sites. | 1 year | Necessary |
| __stripe_sid | Set by Stripe for fraud prevention and payment session management. | 30 minutes | Necessary |
| _ga | Used by Google Analytics to distinguish users. | 2 years | Analytics |
| _ga_<container-id> | Used by Google Analytics to persist session state. | 2 years | Analytics |
Note: Google Analytics cookies (_ga, _ga_<container-id>) are set through Google Tag Manager only after you provide explicit consent for analytics tracking. These cookies are fully controlled by Google Consent Mode v2 and will not be set if you decline or do not provide analytics consent.
Browser Storage (localStorage)
In addition to cookies, we use browser localStorage to store certain data locally on your device. This includes:
- Cookie consent preferences: Your cookie consent choices (accept/decline per category)
- UI preferences: Settings like page size
This data is stored entirely in your browser and never leaves your device unless you explicitly save or submit it. You can clear this data at any time through your browser settings.
Session Storage (sessionStorage)
We use browser sessionStorage to store temporary data that only persists for the duration of your current browsing session. This data is cleared when you close your browser tab or window. This includes:
- GPC detection: A flag to prevent repeated Global Privacy Control signal checks per session
This data is stored entirely in your browser and is automatically cleared when the tab is closed.
Third-Party Cookies
We use third-party services like Google Tag Manager (GTM) and Google Analytics to help us analyze how our services are used. We also use Stripe for secure payment processing. These services may place cookies on your device. The use of these cookies is governed by the privacy policies of these third-party providers. We only enable analytics and marketing services if you provide explicit consent.
Managing Your Preferences
You can manage your preferences through multiple methods:
- Use the cookie consent banner when first visiting the site.
- Adjust your preferences anytime via the Cookie Preferences dialog in your privacy settings.
- Clear or block cookies via your browser settings. Note that disabling necessary cookies will prevent you from logging into Space Monkey.
- Use the "Log Out" functionality to manually clear your secure session.
